Acupuncture for Lumbago

I was very interested to read how helpful acupuncture can be in case of hip pain, as this is a problem for many people as they age (two of my sisters and I have this problem). I have just started doing some work for Age-Well.org, a website which promotes healthy aging. We have an article about the use of Acupuncture for Lumbago and the treatment of lower back pain, but it is very general. Would you be interested in contributing to the website with a link back to your own site?

Back Problems - The Spinal Coumn

Great article about back exercises. I've been meaning to either find an author to write on this subject or write something myself. We have a section on back problems at age-well.org and I'd like to contribute this article about the use of Acupuncture for Lumbago and the treatment of lower back pain. Would you be interested in contributing to age well with a link or links back to your blog?

Raw food diet

The raw food diet is a diet based on unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, nuts, dried fruit, and seaweed. It is recommended that three quarters of what you consume should not be cooked as heat is believe to destroy enzymes that promote digestion and absorb nutrients. Eating raw should mean eating less and weight loss. Proponents of the raw food diet say it gives you added energy, a healthier skin and reduces the risk of heart disease. Strictly reducing calories is known to increase longevity.

However, most health care professionals agree that a healthy diet, regular exercise and developing smart habits are the best way to increase your longevity and prevent age related diseases. Developing a positive attitude can also help you enjoy your life to the full.

Control your weight

age-well.org strongly encourages everyone to develop healthy lifestyle choices from an early age including eating well, exercising regularly and developing good habits. This will help you control your weight, prevent age-related contions, look good and feel good as you age.

Osteoporosis

Very interesting article with some excellent suggestions and vital information about Bisphosphonate Drugs. Few things are more important to your longevity than bone health and it is wise to take measures to prevent and treat the condition. However, caution is vital in the use of Bisphosphonate Drugs. My advice is to consult a medical professional if you have any questions about these issues and take a list of questions with you so that you won't forget to ask for all the information you need.

Few things are more important to your longevity than bone health. Bones are made up of living tissue and need adequate nutrition and exercise in the same way as your other organs and the muscular system does. The skeleton consists of inter-connected bones that have a thick layer on the outside and an inner layer of supporting tissue. This tissue resembles a honeycomb and when it becomes thin, it can no longer support the bone. This is the condition known as osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis (porous bones) is a very serious disease which can be potentially debilitating or, in advanced stages fatal. It is a silent disease at first and often the sufferer is not aware of it until he breaks a bone. Osteopenia is low bone density and often leads to Osteoporosis. Both diseases are most prevalent among thin Caucasian or Asian women, although men can also be affected. If you have Osteopenia it is very important to take action to build up your bone density.

Happiness (from Self-development Section)

Someone close to me (but not geographically) is in a very bad place right now. It is always frustrating when you don't live close enough to offer support, but at least i can forward this article as it has great advice, especially regarding diet and exercise. I was interested to read that omega-3 fatty acids have such an impact on depression. I think it is essential that we all do what we can to increase happiness levels and remain positive when the news we hear on a daily basis can be very worrying, from both financial and political points of view.

I am founder of a website about healthy aging and we've just started a section on self development which also includes articles on happiness and includes a forum where people can share strategies for happiness and get advice from others. Be there first to comment!

Thanks for this article - I love your website and look forward to your newsletters.

Three Strategies to Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can be a devastating disease, but the good news is there are certain things you can do to decrease your risk. Here are my three top strategies to Osteoporosis Prevention:

1. Eat Well

2. Exercise Well
As we age we often experience poor co-ordination and balance, leading to and increased risk of falling and breaking bones. Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise and those that improve our balance, can greatly lower these risks. With this in mind, we recommend the following:

  • Visit the exercise well section of the age-well.org website to learn why exercise is necessary for healthy aging.

  • Maintain a regular program of weight-bearing exercise to prevent bone loss and build new bone.

  • Supplement your weight bearing exercises with at least 30 minutes of an exercise like dancing, running, walking, step, climbing, cross-country skiing, Nordic walking at least three times a week.

  • Include exercises in your program which target your posture, balance, and flexibility to reduce risk of falling.

3. Develop Smart Habits

  • Quit Smoking - Smoking can increase your bone density loss by up to 10%, double your risk of spinal fractures and increase your risk of hip fracture by 50%. Smoking can also interfere with the healing process.

  • Reduce alcohol - Too much alcohol prevents your body from absorbing calcium properly. Stay within the recommended daily intake of alcohol for your sex.

  • Get enough sunshine to ensure you are getting adequate vitamin D to help process the calcium in your diet.

If you have lost more than one inch in height in the past year or have any other warning signs of osteoporosis, please consult your doctor, to discuss what test or treatment might be necessary.
